Throughout human history, wilderness survival was mastered by indigenous people across the globe, and knowing these skills was not taken lightly because they meant survival or starvation. Basic wilderness survival tools were constructed out of any usable material, and no design was universal. The most essential survival tool for a human in the wilderness was a knife or edged weapon for defense and hunting food. It can be made from rock.

  Find a piece of obsidian, chert or quartzite rock to make a cutting tool. Obsidian is a black, glass-like volcanic rock. It can be found all over the world and is the best stone for constructing a knife. Obsidian is still used today in surgical tools because of its naturally sharp edge.

  Hit the piece of obsidian, chert or quartzite with a round hammer stone or other available striking device. A hammer stone is a large, heavy stone capable of fracturing other rocks. Smaller pieces of rock will flake off. If working with obsidian, one shard of stone will be extremely sharp, and it can be used for cutting.

  Set the piece of obsidian, chert or quartzite in your palm. If you have a piece of cloth or leather, place that in your palm first, then place the stone. This will protect your hand.

  Use a small hammer stone--preferably a small stone with a somewhat pointed end--and begin striking along the edge of the rock in your hand. The idea is to flake off the edges to form a sharp edge and shape the rock into a pointed weapon. This is known as "flaking." Only strike along the edge of the rock, and leave a space to grip---about four inches on one end of the rock is ideal.

  Wrap the grip end of the rock tightly with any available cordage item such as a shoelace, paracord, piece of a shirt or animal hide to make a knife. Or tie it to a sturdy stick to make a spear.
